Networks # 2

Taking the idea of neurons, synapses and the networks they create I decided to experiment with what they would look like if they were scanned from above.
In my world this is what a brain scan would look like!

(The lines in the middle are supposed to represent the synapses
and the pattern at the edge are the neurons)

Pencil Box

We drove back from Scotland yesterday and when we got home I had to go up to Malmesbury Art Society to drop off a couple of pen and ink pictures that are going into an exhibition in Swindon.
I couldn't resist doing a BDC of my friend Lucy's Pencil Box.

Monday, 27 February 2012

The human brain contains about 10 billion nerve cells which are called Neurons. Each neuron is connected to its neighbours through synapses and it is the synapses that enable us to transmit information from one part of our brain to another. Together they form a complex network that allow us to make sense of the world.

Sometimes I Think You Are From Another Planet

Has your other half ever come out with something that makes you look at them in bewilderment and go 'Eh?'? Chris does it all the time...sometimes I really do think he is from another planet!
(I have been known to ask him if he has been replaced by a pod person...think
Donald Sutherland in Invasion Of The Body Snatchers)

Opposites Attract

Well, since I had a go at drawing what 'On The Same Wave Length' looks like I thought I would have a go at doing 'Opposites Attract'.

Mind Map

We drove up to Scotland today so it seemed as good a time as any to have a go at doing a mind map. Those of you from Glasgow might recognise this...its Park Circus (for those of you not from Glasgow its the circular bit where the ear should be).
Chris and I got married there :-)

Just had a thought... I could offer personalisations of this featuring a map of somewhere significant to the person couldn't I.

Technically Minded

I've always been a bit envious of those that are technically minded! I think its cause I'm not...and when I say I'm not...I mean I'm really not! Not even a wee bit!

(Thanks go to my lovely, clever and technically minded friend Michelle for giving me this idea. I couldn't figure out how to make it work in the 'create' part of my sketchbook but it lept out at me when I was thinking about what my heads could represent)

Not Broken Just Different

Yesterday I listened to a mother describe how her sons mental illness changed him and I was deeply moved by her use of the word 'broken'. Her sons illness is extreme and I can understand why she chose the word 'broken' to describe him...yesterdays picture was my reaction to one persons story.

1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our life and today I got to thinking about mental health in all its guises...from the mild to the severe. There is no shame in having mental health problems...they are usually caused by someone trying to cope with too much for too long on their own. People suffering are not broken...just different and shouldn't we try and celebrate both our similarities and differences?

She described her son's mind as 'broken'.

We Have A Special Connection (or On The Same Wave Length)

So, I got to thinking about how we describe people as being 'on the same wave length' as we are. There are definitely some people you just click with be it a partner or a friend so I thought I would expand on yesterdays brain wave idea and have a go at illuatrating that connection. I guess this is what love and friendship look like to me....a kind of meeting of the minds.

Brain Wave

What can I say? The idea grew into a brain wave!

An Idea Grows

Well, this kinda does what it says on the tin! Yesterdays drawing was in response to the Discovery Interview I had to do on Thursday and it has sparked a whole load of ideas. There may be a few heads appearing here over the next few days as I try them out.

Sometimes The Cracks Start To Show

We try to be brave and deal with everything life has to throw at us but
sometimes the cracks start to show...and sometimes they wont fit back together again.

Birds of Paradise

Just because I enjoyed doing the roses yesterday and I love Birds of Paradise.

Wednesday, 15 February 2012

Chris bought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers yesterday and the roses jumped out at me and said 'draw me' (They didn't actually jump out at me...that would have been weird!). So here are my version of roses done using ink and watercolour.

Thinking about it, I should probably have done the roses yesterday since it was Valentines day but never mind!

Sketchbook Project - Capture # 13 (The cobweb prison of shyness))

I had a conversation with my Mum recently (She features in this drawing...she is the one on the left) about how people can be caught in a cobweb prison of shyness. She said that other people can break in but its difficult for the shy person to break out. I was inspired.

Create # 9.2 (The Writer 3)

This was the last 'Writer' one that I wanted to try out. I like this one and 9.2 (the one with the typewritter) but can't choose which one would be better in the sketchbook. What do you think?

Sunday, 12 February 2012

Chris and I are celebrating Valentines Day today cause I'm going to be in London this week. He's quite romantic (is cooking up a storm in the kitchen as I type) so I thought I would write a message to him in binary...that way I could be as mushy as I like and no-one, apart from him, will know what it says. I started doing the 1's and 0's and then thought it might be nicer to do something a bit different with it. So here it is (it looks way better in real's straight for a start!). It says 'My home is in your arms and nowhere else' (but don't tell him I told you!)

Obviously this one will not be part of this months draw but if you like it and would like a message written to your loved one in a similar stylie then I can do one specially for you :-)

BCD - Thai Lantern

I love lanterns and we have a few dotted about the house but I think of all of them this one is my favourite! Its made of paper and we bought it at a market in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. When I look at it I think of spicy food, elephants (Chiang means elephant in Thai), temples and balmy evenings walking through the market. I loved Chiang Mai and it was a place we visited many times when we lived out there! (If your interested you can read about our first ever trip there by clicking on this link)

Commiserations to everyone else but hey...there is always next month!

Sketchbook Project - Capture # 12 (Taken)

I would love to be able to play chess...I never quite got the hang of it!
Does make a good capture though eh :-)

Sketchbook Project - Create # 9.1 (The Writer 2)

Told you to be prepared for variations on a theme! I think, out of all of them, this is probably the best one. I have one more idea to try but I think I will wait a few days cause I'm get a bit fed up with this concept.

The words on this drawing are (from the top down)

'I can close my eyes and see the scenes unfolding'
'Now he was sixty years old, with silver hair'
'and in the course of the conversation'
'On summer mornings they would sit'
'I never wanted to be anything else'
'and calmly ate figs out of a bag'
'out along the skies of Paris'
'and she hardly ever spoke in public'
'But those that did decide'
'he had seen them all'
'I can hear their echoes'
'It was not much to look at'

They are supposed to spark the imagination (They did for me!)

For Dad

A few years ago I did a drawing that featured my Mum. After doing the drawing yesterday I thought I might have a go at doing my Dad...hope he still speaks to me after this! Faces are not my strong point!

I thought I had got away with it...but today it caught up with me!

We did a seven mile Nordic Walk on Sunday.

In. The. Snow!! (I hope your impressed cause I was bloody amazed that Chris and I managed to drag ourselves out our pit at 8am on a snowy Sunday morning to go walking!). It was actually rather lovely (I know! Who would ever have imaged?!). The last time we did that walk we went up one huge curving steep hill that damn near killed me. I must have stopped at least five times! This time I made it up TWO rather huge curving steep hills and didn't stop once...mainly cause I had Steve walking beside me telling me that I could do it! It wasn't fast and it probably wasnt pretty (unless red and wheezing does it for you!) but I did it and you know what....yesterday the old legs were not feeling too bad!

Today? Well, all I can say is that it appears to have caught up with me.

*wobbles off like an old woman*

Sketchbook Project - Create # 9 (The Writer)

I was thinking about the creative process of writing today and I decided that I wanted to try and pay tribute to those that create with words. You have to start by actually reading the book otherwise it wont make any sense! I'm not entirely sure this works so am going to play about a bit with this idea. Be prepared to see a few variations on this have been warned :-)

Sketchbook Project - Capture # 11 (I'm your Venus)

In theory this was a good idea but in practice? Meh!
I think it is one of the weakest drawings I've produced so far!

Sketchbook Project - Capture # 10.1 (Tangled web # 2)

I played about a bit with the image in a bid to keep it interesting for me. I'm not sure which one works you think I should include both in my Sketchbook?

Sketchbook Project - Capture # 10 (Oh The Tangled Web We Weave)

Hmmm, this might look better the other way on white rather than white on black. I think I may know that tomorrows pic is going to be :-)

Thursday, 2 February 2012

I was at the Art Society the other night and one of the lovely ladies there *waves at Mary* had printed off a photo that she took on holiday of cranes. She produced a beautiful detailed drawing which she is going to turn into a painting...I produced this!

This working for a living is overrated!

I am absolutely knackered tonight! Spent all of yesterday working on a briefing paper and finally got it finished today. If the proposals become a reality I will be an extremely happy camper! Anyway, here is a BCD of my office chair.
