The Blackhouse by Peter May

I think most of you know by now that my Dad is the award winning writer Peter May so it will come as no surprise to you that this post is a shameless plug for his new book. (At least this is exciting....waaay better than listening to me going on about the hell that is working with macro's in an excel spreadsheet!)

I am his biggest fan but I am also his harshest critic. This book? Well, I honestly think that this is the best thing he's ever written. I couldn't put it down and, in my humble opinion, it's a must buy for anyone that loves a good book! Don't just take my word for's already reached number 15 in the UK's top 40 bestselling hardback books (it's only been out a couple of weeks!), it's won the prestigious 'Prix des Lecteurs' (readers' prize) at the French Le Havre festival of crime writing (it's been out for a while in France) and it's currently Waterstones book of the month.

This is what it says on the book jacket:

A brutal killing takes place on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a land of harsh beauty and inhabitants of deep-rooted faith.

A Murder

Detective Fin Macleod is sent from Edinburgh to investigate. For Lewis-born Macleod, the case represents a journey both home and into his past.

A Secret

Something lurks within the close-knit island community. Something sinister.

A Trap

As Fin investigates, old skeletons begin to surface, and soon he, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

It's described on Amazon as 'a crime novel of rare power and vision'.

You can buy it on Amaxon here or you can download it on Kindle here.....go won't regret it!

(Told you this was a shameless plug but a daughter has to do her bit!)

Another title for the wishlist, thankyou. Also to tell LadyFi I have just had a delivery from Book Depository to Italy and they were very efficient!

I didn't know either - but then, my apologies, I hadn't heard of him...until now. So there's nothing wrong with a bit of shameless plugging as far as these things go!

I haven't really read much crime writing, as far as I can remember, no reason why I shouldn't give it a go though ;-)

Funnily enough I knew about this book because my company owns a large book distributor and I'd seen it on our list. Be interesting to see if the kindle version outsells the hardback or the paperback.

JJ said...

Sounds fantastic! I will order it this weekend.

I love the shameless plug!
And I love that he loved it, too.
So much, that I'll stop at the bookstore and ask--and if that doesn't work, I'll get it delivered!

Ohhhhhhhh.......NOW I'm really, really, REALLY excited! :-)

Amanda said...

How EXCITING! And sounds blinking brilliant! You must be so proud.

I will put it on my to be read list right this minute!

Ayak said...

Well I didn't know about your Dad. But I'm glad I do now because this is really my favourite genre. I will be adding him to my list of authors to read in the near future.

Well done your Dad!

Talli Roland said...

Oh, that sounds so fantastic, Carol. Off to Kindle to check it out!

LindyLou - You are very welcome. I hope you enjoy it! (and it's good to know about the Book Depository too!)

Trousers - Well, if that's not the genre that you normally go for then there is no reason that you would have heard of him.

It's a gripping read so I can't think of a better book to introduce you to the delights of a good crime thriller!

Mark - It will be very interesting! I personally think that the Kindle downloads should be cheaper than they currently are but I guess we'll just need to wait and see what happens within that market.

JJ - Yay! You will need to let me know what you think of it :-)

Mel - *grins* and now I'm really excited to know that you will be reading it! Like I said to JJ, you'll have to let me know what you think :-)

Amanda - LOL....I have a 'to be read' list too...It grows almost daily! Do let me know when you get to it!

Ayak - I honestly think that you will love it...especially if crime is your favourite genre!
(Yup, am rather proud of him!)

Talli - You won't be dissapointed! (am really enjoying The Hating Game....not read much but am liking what I've read so far!)

DJ - I'm so glad it arrived safe and sound :-). Can't wait to hear what you think!

Very cool that you gave your Dad a plug. I just gave my daughter one on my blog...of course she's not a famous author.

How cool to have a published writer in the family!

Carol said...

Kevin - I have the Kindle app on my itouch and I love it! I'm chuffed to bits that you've bought it...enjoy :-)

Sharon - Yup, it's our job as family members to do shameless plugs every-so-often regardless of whether they are authors or not :-)

Our mystery reading group, Murder in Sin City (we are located in Las Vegas), is reading The Blackhouse for our April 2012 selection. I've finished reading it; could not put it down! Absolutely stellar job -- and you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT to crow about your dad: he is a wonderful, talented, intelligent writer.

Bean - Welcome and thank you for leaving such a lovely message!

I loved it too and you know what? The Lewis Man (2nd in the trilogy) is every bit as good...if not better! If you enjoyed The Blackhouse then you will definitely enjoy The Lewis Man :-)

I am very proud of him. He has worked his socks off for years and its really nice to see him getting some recognition.

Can I just say...I totally LOVE the name of your reading group. Very clever and made me smile :-)
