Sheep are not as stupid as they look

Sheep, which I have always thought of as rather stupid animals, have invented a way of thwarting cattle grids!! (Did you already know this?)

When they see green fields at the other side of a cattle grid they.....wait for it.....roll across!! I'm not kidding....they lie down on their sides and roll across!! (That's bloody inventive if you ask me!!)

Not only that, if there is a herd of sheep wanting to cross a grid one of them will 'sacrifice' itself (Do you think it's picked by the other sheep or do you think it volunteers?) by lying down over the grid and letting the rest of the herd walk over it!!

Chris shared these nuggets of wisdom with me over the weekend.....I've googled it and it's true!! (Why does he know these things??). Not only am I rather impressed with the sheep, I am now slightly concerned that they might be plotting to take over the world!!

Sheep aren't the silly woolly wostsits that people think they are! The wool is on their back not between their ears!! I love sheep - esp Herdicks, Dad calls me his WBS - Wanna Be Shepherdess!

Gary Larson was right, then, all along.

Lady Fi - Nnnnoooooooo, I can see one from my window....it looks a bit shifty to me...

Calico Kate - LOL at the wool is on their back not between their ears!! I've never had any particular feelings about them...actually, that's not true...I was fascinated by the fact that if they fall on their backs they can't get back up again when I was little...all my landscape pictures from that time have at least one sheep on it's back with it's four legs sticking up in the air :-) (I think that may have been where I got the notion that they were a bit stupid!!). Now, well....now I think they might be plotting...

Queenie - OMG does that mean he's right about the bears and cows too? (I may never leave the house again!!)

Remember 'Animal Farm'?...............

Yeah but they are quite stupid because when they lie on their backs they can't get up and then they die of heart failure. That's quite dim, isn't it?

PS I am quite worried about you out there in the country.

I'm glad im not a sheep. funny post and informative too!

Carol said...

Claire - Ok, am now officially scared!! Is there a name for a phobia of sheep?

JJ - I always thought that that was a really big design flaw in sheep!!

I'm quite worried about me too!!! I'm starting to think my mental state is bbbbaaaaad (hehehe)

Lily - They are taking over the world I tell you....

I read somewhere that 'hefted' sheep in Yorkshire need very little shepherding because they 'learn' their territory and pass it on from generation to generation.

We all have our own hefts - 'comfort zones' is what we sometimes call them - the boundary of mine gets smaller as I get older but I quite like that.

You mean you didn't know they were plotting to take over the world? When last did you look closely at a head of government?!

And by the way, there's a wee something for you over at my place ;-) xx

How bizaar (sp?), clever though. Then again, not that clever if they then die because they can't get up.

Oh that is so sweet. I love learning things like this - blogging is very educational

Your blog blows my mind. I never know what to expect and, don't tell anyone I said this but, I think I like it that way. I had no idea that sheep were so clever but I have always thought them very lovely sweet creatures. We have a noughts and crosses that has sheep uses black and white sheep as the playing pieces.

Mark - Wow!! That kind of blows my mind!! I had no idea that they 'learn' their territory....that is amazing!! Now I'm really really concerned!!

Absolute Vanilla - I've not looked that closely (although I do think that Gordon Brown breathes like Darth Vader....next time he's on TV watch him....It's strangely hypnotic!!).

Ooohh, I shall be over directly...that sounds exciting :-)

Debs - It's very clever isn't it!! I do wonder about how the sheep that lies down is selected...

French Fancy - You can blame Chris...he is full of very random facts!!

DJ - Hehehehe, I love that you like my slightly odd blog :-).

I didn't either...came as a bit of a shock to be honest (which is why I had to google it...didn't believe Chris when he told me...I thought he was winding me up!!)

Sheep are not so daft. When we lived in Straiton, they changed the flock of sheep that were used for the sheepdog trials half way through, because they got to know the layout of the competition after a few goes, and it was an advantage to the dogs that were drawn later.

Mum - Blimey, I'm learning a lot about sheep after writing this post!!! They really are not as stupid as they look are they!!

on further sheep related trivia - for training sheep dogs they use ducks, as the sheep very quickly learn to go the pen, whereas the less (differently?) intelligent ducks don't and the dog has to learn the herding part.

As for design flaws - sheep aren't the only ones - If an elephant lies down it can die as its internal organs are effectively crished by their own weight. I think they more or less suffocate - but you can google that one as well!

Is this a sad reflection on how my brother spends his time at work?

This will add to my list of animal facts I learned this week- the first was that wasps start being argy bargy around this time of year because they are DRUNK! It's true. the neds of the insect world are pissed on fermented fruit, that's why they are having a go.

Carol said...

Jo - Really?? Sheep are more intelligent that ducks?? Well I never!!!

I didn't know that about elephants!!

Hahahaha, I have no idea where he picks up these little gems!!

Misssy M - I thought they just got a bit stroppy because they were coming to the end of their lives!! So they are actually aggressive pissheads....who would have thought!!

Oh no I am all upset now about the sheep that cant get up...boo hoo

Carol said...

Blu - On the west coast of Scotland they call them 'Cowpit Yowes' an expression that completely baffled me the first time I heard it!! (Being a Glasgow girl and not having an awful lot of experience with sheep!!)

Not having experience with sheep is not in itself a bad thing!

Mum - LOL...that is very true!!

Kevin Mullins said...

Wow, seems like a lot of effort to goto if you are a sheep. Why don't they just open the gate to the side if they are that clever ;-) Looks like Sheep are raising the baaaar once more.

Carol said...

Kevin - Ahhhh, but that would mean that they would have to have opposable thumbs and that kind of evolutions could take a while :-). I fear that their world domination plans could not be put on hold that long!!

I'm baffled where Chris gets all this info from. Was it over too many Singa in BKK where all this amazing seeped into his brain? Amazing facts - keep them coming.

Carol said...

Anon - If it makes you feel any better I'm completely baffled too!! He didn't drink that much Singa...perhaps it was the Leo beer that did it :-)

Oh, don't encourage him!!
